The National Network for Safe Communities (NNSC) at John Jay College seeks a full-time Data Analytics Associate who can use data to inform and support NNSC’s crime reduction strategies and support the ongoing projects of the NNSC data team. The scope of this work will support, inter alia, the following areas: group violence interventions (domestic and international), intimate partner violence intervention, innovations in prosecution, and other projects including topics like opioids, larceny, impunity, and prison violence. The Associate will contribute to reports and support the day-to-day management of partner site data, both for the NNSC’s partner jurisdictions and for use by NNSC’s teams.
NNSC supports cities to implement and advance proven strategies that reduce violence and improve public safety, minimize arrest and incarceration, strengthen communities, and improve relationships between law enforcement and communities.
Responsibilities
- Explore, analyze, and visualize data to inform implementation of the NNSC’s crime reduction strategies
- Work collaboratively with data entry support teams to ensure that law enforcement data is entered, cleaned, and coded correctly and according to requirements for NNSC analytic processes
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of graphs, charts, and other data products for use by the NNSC’s teams
- Conduct social network analyses (using R or similar) and spatial analyses (using ArcGIS or similar) to identify crime dynamics in partner jurisdictions
- Collect data through field research exercises
- Contribute to reports analyzing and summarizing local crime dynamics for partner jurisdictions
- Create and maintain systems, tools, and processes to track key metrics related to strategy implementation, success, and innovation in the Network sites
- Support the data team as needed with additional data management and analysis to address specific challenges and question as they arise
- Support special research and development projects as they arise
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or quantitative field required; Master’s preferred
- Self-motivated and experience working in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment
- Excellent organization skills with strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize and capacity to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Expert level of experience with Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Proficient in programming with R, STATA, SPSS, or other statistical software
- Proficient in ArcGIS or similar mapping software
