Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago is seeking an individual to work on a team engaged in empirical, analytical and conceptual child and family welfare research. The Associate Researcher’s main contribution to research projects is the management, linking, statistical analysis, and presentation of project data. The individual will participate in discussions regarding study design and methodology; develop and maintain programs that transform data into analyzable formats and/or that can be utilized for data analysis; and perform modeling and statistical analyses of data using R, STATA, SAS, SQL, and/or other appropriate analytic software programs. The Associate Researcher will also participate in meetings with external stakeholders and write sections of research results for funders and publications.

The position will report directly to Brian Chor, Senior Researcher.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:

  • Converts, merges and assembles large-scale data for analysis. Develops and maintains programs that transform data into analyzable formats and/or that can be utilized for data analysis, with a strong emphasis on generalizability and transparency.
  • Automate existing and emerging processes for importing, documenting, integrating, and updating data as well as to coding best practices such as code review and version control.
  • Participates in discussions regarding study design and methods. Assists in developing study objectives, and designing sampling, randomization and data collection procedures to achieve study objectives.
  • Performs modeling and complex statistical analyses of data using R, STATA, SAS, SQL, and/or other appropriate analytic software programs. Performs advanced statistical analyses under supervision.
  • Writes sections of research results for funders and/or publications, and may assist with report production activities, including proofing, formatting and creating tables and graphs.
  • Participates in meetings with external stakeholders and may present findings at meetings and/or conferences.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

Master’s degree in biostatistics, computer programming, econometrics, statistics, or significant advanced coursework in statistics within a social science degree OR a relevant bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of five years of relevant experience required.

Other Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ data analysis experience required.
  • Strong background in statistical methodology required.
  • Professional experience with complex data systems strongly preferred; experience with public sector administrative data and data systems preferred.
  • Experience with R, STATA, SAS, SQL, and/or other appropriate program languages required, preferably with experience working in a Unix environment.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with large administrative datasets strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple, concurrent tasks required.
  • Strong interest in and aptitude for developing analytic skills for working with administrative data required.
  • Strong attention to detail with good organization skills required.
  • Ability to translate and convey complex concepts and study findings in oral and written communications required.
  • Demonstrated capacity for working in a collaborative research environment required.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative required.
  • Problem-solving skills required.
  • Demonstrated judgment and discretion in the handling of sensitive information required.
