Authoring a training course : Machine learning with R – for Packt

Hi,

We mainly create courses that are video-based, with optional text and assessment sections. Our content is quite practical and results-oriented (it’s what our customers keep asking for).

We might structure this as three lessons, each part of a full course, where each lesson can also be viewed in isolation. We might have the topics covered in each lesson with its increasing graph of complexities.

We typically aim for one lesson (around 2-4 hours of content) to take a couple of months to complete, so around six months for a complete course. If you imagine sitting down on a Sunday afternoon and creating around half an hour of content a week, that’s the kind of manageable pace that we aim for. We handle all of the fiddly video editing, packaging and distribution work, whilst providing editorial feedback every step of the way.

Regarding the remuneration, I would like to say that we don’t typically guarantee or offer revenue estimates for individual projects. There are so many different factors at play behind the successes of our top titles (the topic area, timing, level of subscription usage, and so on). What I will say is that we wouldn’t be willing to invest time and resource into projects if we didn’t expect a significant return for both ourselves and our authors.

Our actual editorial process is quite straightforward. We first need to design and agree upon a content roadmap; basically an outline. When we’ve agreed upon coverage, we can get a delivery schedule and contract signed by both parties. We then introduce you to your supporting development editors and get started with content creation.

This is all about creating a course with Packt. I’d love to hear your thoughts about this. Do get back to me if you have any queries or concerns and I’ll be happy to help. You can shoot a quick email or ping me on Skype at ‘koushiks@packtpub.com‘.

Thanks,

Koushik Sen
