Job Description

Position Purpose & Summary:
In collaboration with faculty investigators and CHLA research staff, performs statistical analysis and other tasks relevant to a biostatisticians role in support of qualitative and quantitative scientific research and evaluation projects. The position is specifically in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Tasks include support for a randomized controlled clinical trial, secondary analysis of observational data from a large international study, and support of faculty and trainees on retrospective and prospective studies related to children. The Biostatistician II has post-graduation work experience as a statistician in an academic research environment, and will be able to work independently, with minimual supervision.

Duties & Responsibilities (In order of importance)
Statistical Analysis: Conceives and performs appropriate statistical analyses using modern statistical methods. This should include experience or traning with clinical trial design including randomization schema, proportional hazard and survival analysis, and data management. Additional skills related to multi-level mixed modeling and propensity scoring is also desired. Synthesizes and summarizes statistical results into graphical displays and written reports. Utilizes data from existing division, hospital, and other research databases for statistical analysis using SAS/R/Stata or other appropriate statistical analysis applications

Communication/Project Development:
Has good communication skills and can generate written and oral reports for presentation to a Data Safety and Monitoring Board for a clinical trial. Writes methods sections and portions of results sections for manuscripts and reports of research findings, and assumes authorship-level responsibility for these components. Similarly contribute to other dissemination activities, including presentations, technical reports, and other materials developed for the research community. Contributes to the development of research proposals, research grants, and contracts by writing text describing statistical methods and the results of statistical analyses for preliminary studies.

Database Utilization, Design, and Management:
Participate in the establishment and maintenance of computer databases as required by research project needs. Works with data entry and other data management staff as necessary to insuring overall integrity of research databases. Participates in the development of electronic case report forms (CRFs) for clinical studies, and helps with data management.

Minimum Education/Training Required:
• M.S. in statistics or biostatistics, or equivalent degree or experience, with emphasis on statistical methods and the theory that underlies their development and use. Experience in the application of sophisticated statistical analytic methods, such as survival analysis, multivariate linear or logistic models, hierarcical models, and propensity scoring.
• Training in statistical concepts related to experimental and clinical study design, and some experience in their application in a research environment.
• High-level familiarity with statistical analysis packages such as Stata and SAS, and ability to utilize lower-level computational or programming languages such as R, S-Plus, VB, or C++ as necessary
• Understanding of basic concepts of design and utilization of relational databases, and ability to utilize SQL-based databases such as MSSQL, MySQL, or Oracle as necessary

Minimum Experience Required:
One year or more work experience as a statistician in an academic research environment, or equivalent experience.

Skills Required:
Excellent written and oral English skills. Ability to communicate clearly in writing and in person, and ability to participate productively in interactions with senior level investigators and a Data Safety Monitoing Board.
