The Fisheries program of ABARES is looking for a suitably qualified person to undertake analyses of fisheries data for the provision of scientific advice on:
• the status of fish stocks managed by the Commonwealth Government of Australia;
• the impact of fishing on the marine ecosystem; and
• the performance of bycatch mitigation measures.
ABARES provides this advice to a wide cross-section of the Australian Government including other science organisations, to the executive of its natural resource management agencies, and to the public. The position will work with established fisheries scientists in Australia and overseas to further this research and support the analytical needs of the Government.
The successful applicant will analyse and visualise data, help with managing data and the computational environment, and assist with communication of results to ABARES stakeholders. There will be many opportunities for creativity and problem solving, as well as independent projects. Opportunities to develop collaborations and undertake training in fields relevant to the job will be encouraged. Excellent written, verbal and visual communication skills are a priority. Experience in fisheries science and/or statistics is preferred together with a post-graduate science degree (PhD or MSc preferably). We are especially keen to hire an individual who is highly motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
