In 2015, HWE opened its New York City office, sourcing some of the top commercial real estate investment sales talent in NYC to expand the firm’s offering to include office, multifamily, retail and land.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
Commercial Real Estate, as an industry, is traditionally slow to adapt to new technologies and market strategies. At HWE, we’re breaking into the New York City CRE market by doing something bold and different. We’re using a data-driven approach to value markets and assets, seeking insights from any data source, including typical industry data but also taxis, Citibikes, Census surveys, subways, Instagram, Yelp – anything we can think of.
As a research associate at HWE, candidate will use both traditional and novel data sources to produce investment-pitch grade insights and reports. Candidate will use both technical skill and creativity to analyze data and dazzle investors. Candidate will work for a startup backed by, and sharing the brand name of, an established, world-class company. And most importantly, candidate will help build something brand new and completely disruptive to the real estate world.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reporting to Tim Kiely, Head of Research and Analytics at the New York Office, candidate will support the firm’s broad research activities, including both traditional industry analyses and novel, data science-oriented approaches to researching the New York commercial real estate market
- Candidate will help build and maintain HWE’s proprietary database (currently housed in AWS Redshift), adding new data sources, cleaning and maintaining datasets typically >1 billion rows
- Candidate will extract, analyze, model and visualize the data. Candidate will master the code-base that is currently used and will collaborate to improve and optimize the code over time
- Candidate will be asked to perform ad-hoc analyses to support the brokerage team on a wide variety of topics
- Candidate will support long-term initiatives of the research team, evaluating new, interesting data sources and techniques for insight generation and delivery
- Candidate may have the opportunity to present the sometimes provocative findings in blogs, white papers and news publications
- Candidate will stay up-to-date on broad market trends effecting the global commercial real estate markets
- Candidate will participate in pitches and arm the team with information different than what competitors may traditionally present
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be able to work in New York City
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Necessary technical skills: R and SQL
- Nice to have technical skills: Python, Javascript, HMTL/CSS. Exposure to AWS EC2, AWS Redshift, AWS S3, Linux
- Knowledge of predictive modeling and statistical inference
- Bachelor’s required, advanced degree in a quantitative field preferred
