Research Assistant at the Economic & Social Statistics Department @ Trier University. Germany

At the Economic and Social Statistics Department, led by Prof. Dr. Ralf Münnich, within Faculty IV of Trier University a position as

a research assistant (65% of a position paid according to TV-L E 13)

is to be filled as soon as possible. The position is temporary with a duration of 3 years at first. A Ph.D. project within the research topics of the department and the connected Research Institute for Official and Survey Statistics (RIFOSS) will be supported and is desired.

Your future tasks

The focus of the research at the department and the research institute is on survey statistics (especially methods of official statistics) and Monte Carlo methods. Additional large research areas include demographic microsimulations as well as statistical indicators. The applicant should at first work in one of the research projects funded by third-party funds that are currently running at the department. The department is part of a close network of national and international researchers in the field of survey statistics and is connected internationally to research institutes and institutions of official statistics. A later involvement in the department‘s teaching (especially within the department‘s own master programme in survey statistics) is possible if the applicant is interested. Command of the German language is required in this case. The department offers ideal conditions for continuing education in a young and dynamic team within an excellent working atmosphere.

Your profile

The applicant should have earned a master‘s degree (or equivalent) with above-average grades in statistics, business administration or economics (with a clear quantitative focus, ideally in statistics), mathematics, or informatics. A sound knowledge of survey statistics would be an advantage. A quick familiarisation with this topic is possible as well. The software/programming language of choice at the department is the open source statistical programming language R. As the working language in most projects is English, the applicant should have a safe command of the English language (written and spoken).

We would like to specifically encourage potential applicants with experience in at least one of the following fields to submit their application:

– Statistical modelling (methods for panel data, small area estimation, etc.)

– Optimisation (algorithms, sampling designs, etc.)

– Methods of statistical disclosure control

– Machine learning and other methods used in data science

Given fitting qualifications, applications of severly disabled persons will be favoured (please include related proofs in your application). Trier University aims to increase the number of female researchers employed at the university. Accordingly, we strongly encourage female researchers to apply for this position.
